The workshop

How HZMAN started

The first HZMAN piece was a steel cross on a wheat chain, made in 2013 for a friend who rode and kept snapping silver ones. Silver is soft. It stretches at the bail, the bail opens, and the pendant ends up on a garage floor. Steel does not do that.

That single order turned into a bench of crosses and dog tags, then skulls, then the norse knotwork that half the range carries now. We at HZMAN still work the same way: someone asks for a shape, we make it, and if it survives a year of daily wear it stays in the catalogue.

The Los Angeles studio is small. There is no showroom and no appointment book, because the work happens on a bench and ships in a box.

Faith line

HZMAN crosses and prayer pieces

Crosses, crucifixes, praying hands, saints and prayer plates. It is the oldest part of the HZMAN range and still the largest: the workshop started with a steel cross on a wheat chain, and the shapes here have grown out of that one piece.

Materials

Why steel, leather and stone

Stainless steel holds an edge of detail that pewter and zinc alloy lose in the mould. A skull cast in steel still has eye sockets at arm's length. The same skull in soft alloy reads as a lump after a month in a pocket. Steel also shrugs off water, sweat and sunscreen, which is the whole point of jewellery you wear rather than store.

Leather is the opposite material and we keep it for that reason. A braided cuff darkens where your wrist touches it and softens into your own shape. It also hates the shower, so the HZMAN range keeps the two apart and says which is which on every page.

Stone and wood beads sit between them. They polish smooth with wear, they chip if you drop them on tile, and hand sanitiser dulls them faster than anything else people do to jewellery.

HZMAN skulls, claws and daggers

Skulls, reapers, claws, daggers and everything with a shadow in it. The detail is where these live or die: a cast skull with soft eye sockets looks like a toy, so the pieces we keep on the bench are the ones where the relief still reads at arm's length.

HZMAN hammers, knots and wolves

Hammers, valknuts, runes, wolves and knotwork. Norse motifs carry meaning for the people who wear them, and the HZMAN approach is to name the motif plainly and leave the meaning to the wearer.

How it wears

What steel and plating do over a year

Plated gold wears. Every plated piece in the lineup is steel underneath, and on a ring the finish goes first at the knuckle side where the other hand grips it. On a pendant it goes on the back, against the shirt. Two pieces worn in rotation last roughly twice as long as one worn daily.

Steel runs cooler and harder than silver. It keeps a cast edge for years, it shrugs off water and sweat, and it cannot be resized once it leaves the workshop. Buy the size you measure rather than the size you hope for.

Leather goes the other way and improves. A braided cuff darkens where the wrist touches it and takes the shape of the arm inside a month, which is exactly why the HZMAN way is to keep both materials on the bench instead of choosing one.
